Technical Scenography

This is an intensive 3 or 4 year BA that combines both practical and academic study. Scenography students are exposed to all aspects of technical theatre including set and prop construction, lighting and sound design, stage management and set design.

Year One: Overview of Technical Scenography

  • labs in set construction, props, lighting and sound
  • lectures in scenography, stage management, and safe working practices in the theatre
  • work on one DalTheatre Production: apply skills in a real theatre experience

Years Two and Three: Advanced Studies

  • deeper understanding of first year topics
  • instruction in technical drawing, scenic rigging and flying, and fall arrest
  • perspective and colour theory, role of art history in theatre
  • the directorial/scenographic relationship
  • work on four DalTheatre Productions each year

Year Four (Optional): Honours Credit

  • specialization in set design, lighting design, stage management or props
  • set and lighting designers: design one DalTheatre Production or assistant design two DalTheatre Productions
  • stage management and props: apprentice at the Neptune Theatre, Halifax's largest professional theatre
